None are so blind. . .

I just came from the golf course where I had a fun time, but played a terrible game of golf. When I was loading up my golf bag, a couple other golfers that I know commented on my "Obama '08" sticker; they were not convinced yet. It all ended on my question, "Well, do you want the same as we have had for the last eight years?"

Another individual that I did not know piped in and said that if the Democrats took over, "We won't even be able to pay the interest on the national debt," to which I replied that I just wished that we could spend the present $9 billion a month we are putting out in Iraq toward some decent usage for the people of this country. He retorted, "It doesn't make any difference. Even if all the troops were sitting in Fort Breckenridge, KY, the cost would be the same."

So, it must not make a difference if we pull our troops out as the Iraqi government wants and Obama wants, but we could have them there indefinitely like McCain wants, at least until we get a handle on the oil profits! Yeah!

What about the housing market in this country, and the banking industry and the medical coverage for 45 million Americans? I guess we should just let that work itself out also. . .

Well, friends, none are so blind as the people who refuse to look at a problem.

In case you are like this individual, I have news for you-- we are facing the most dangerous period in all of our nation's history. We cannot afford another "1929." That would surely end up in an outright revolution.

T.B. Pickens, a person who knows more about oil-- how it is found, how it is refined, how it is distributed and how it is made profitable--than most any other living American, said it very correctly: "We cannot drill our way out of this mess."

So people, we need change and real change-- not just a Band-aid here and there. We need someone to lead us in the rebuilding of America's middle class. We are quickly becoming a 2-class society; either super rich or super poor. We do not need to be like India or China in that regard.

We need someone who knows that all the religious visions are generally good and help people achieve spirituality, but civil laws are made so that all citizens are kept safe from harm, both foreign and domestic.

A person or company that cheats people out of their life savings is just as much your enemy as the terrorist who tries to bomb you.

People, I repeat an old saying of mine: Capitalism is beyond a doubt the best economic system for all the people of a country as long as proper restraints are in place to keep a few ruthless crooks from cheating everyone else.

Capitalism without restraint, Laissez Faire, is no better than Communism.

The fight to get rid of all the rules started with Ronald Regan and ends with George W. Bush and a middle class on the verge of complete extinction. We must fight to stop this erosion of rules now or the results will be too horrible to even imagine, and it will be our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will be paying the price.

Thinking Outside the Box

I have, for many years, been thinking about an electric vehicle that could operate for at least a hundred miles before it needs outside charging.

Approximately 16 years ago, i actually purchased a wind powered generator that people use on boats and islands that have no electricity to charge batteries, and therefore have electric lights, etc. I went to California where this unit was manufactured to make sure that this unit was all that it was advertised to be, and I was convinced that it was. I then proceeded to purchase an old, but running small sedan. I removed the combustible engine and replaced it with a 5 HP electric motor, which ran on 10 batteries. I then mounted this generator on the roof, hoping that the generator would create enough energy to keep the batteries charged while running.

I quickly found out that the vehicle actually ran less when the generator was put into operation than it did with the batteries only.

I was told that this would be the result, but I am one who must be convinced at times as to what will or will not work. So much for my big experiment!

However, there is a situation that especially now with the price of gas being so high that should be looked into and this is doable-- it's not just a pipe dream.

Electric powered trolley buses are still used in some cities. I know Dayton, Ohio used them  at least up until a few years ago. I haven't been to downtown Dayton in quite a while though, so I'm not sure. However, with today's technology, an electric bus line makes much more sense than electric street cars. The huge difference in cost and versatility makes an electric powered bus much more do-able than street a street car.

Street cars require overhead wires and steel rails laid into the roadways, where buses require only overhead wiring most of the time. Street cars must stay on the rails when loading and unloading, where buses can pull to the curb to do so. Streetcars are going only where the tracks take them, basically. However with today's technology, a bus can run on battery power for quite some time, giving it the flexibility to go many places a street car cannot. The cost savings of not using diesel or gasoline will quickly be sufficient enough funds to pay for the cost of the overhead wiring. The entire metropolitan area could be served well with this system and we could get people to not depend so much on their cars.

Let's try thinking outside the box for a change and set up a system that is affordable and expandable at a cost that is doable.

Holidays and Heat

Summertime is hot a humid in good old Cincinnati and this year is certainly no different from the norm, except that it might be a little more wet than previous summers. However, we have been able to have a successful "West Fest" in Cheviot, despite the occasional downpour, and still attract a larger crowd than ever. From there we moved to Harrison, OH for their "Fourth of July Parade," which went well, in spite of a persistant drizzle. The youngsters who came out to hellp us sure had a great time handing out candy and stickers.

All said and done, these two events certainly reinforced my belief that the West Side really is the "best side." Local and State politics have taken on a slow mode, compared to the national show, which is good. Maybe at least for a little while we won't have these goofy proposals by other candidates just to get their names in the paper.

There certainly isn't any question, however, that the nation, the state and the county are in very serious financial jeopardy for the foreseeable future. We must come up with some proposals that come from "thinking outside of the box" on how to make Ohio more desirable, more hospitable and more inviting to all, both old and young. We must also come up with why and how we should reside and do business in this great state.

The main function of the legislature is to see that the taxpayer money is spent judiciously and not wasted on projects that help only an individual and not the entire community. I say to you, my fellow taxpayers, that I will never vote for public monies to help an entrepreneur at the expense of the state.

If developers want to develop, that's fine; but they can do it on their own dime. Do not export state money to put up more store fronts and office space, of which we already have enough of in this area. That is improper use of state money. 

On a lighter note, I truly hope that everyone is having as much fun as I am this summer. Running for office has aroused my juices and I'm truly enjoying talking with the residents of my district.

To top off a great week, I had a great bit of luck that I must share with everyone. My gambling  habit consists of playing Pinochle three or four times a week, mostly at the Green Township Senior Center on Eply Road. On Monday of this week, I was delt a once-in-a-lifetime "Double Run." All Pinochle players will admit that this is the most rare hand and most haven't had the pleasure to ever see one!So I have attached a picture of this great bit of luck to this blog. Total , it was 1900 points out of a possible 2020!
