There is a very large group of so-called conservatives who are totally opposed to big government. These people are not just dreamers, but are unrealistic dreamers.
We are well past the Industrial Revolution which brought on large cities and a huge population all concentrated in relatively small areas. The congestion created a need for police and fire services and a need for rules pertaining to housing and health care.
As our population continued to expand, we also needed rules to control agricultural endeavors.
So we are not a small nation of only 100 million or so. We are a very large nation of 350 million of very different backgrounds, races, religions and cultural practices. Just in the 20th Century, we have seen many advances, but also many negative happenings, such as transportation from one continent to another, the ability to instantly speak to people on the other side of the world, the ability to know instantly when one nation uses agression and force to subdue their own neighbor.
The need to be able to react quickly and responsibly is paramount. Taking the government back to the level of when we were an agrarian society is just never feasible. Which leaves us with one big problem-- how do we keep this government honest and effective.
This is the challenge for the 21st Century, not how big is the government, but how honest , effective and beneficial is the government?
We have huge problems confronting us. How do we maintain our position as the leader of the free world and still pay for the wars we have fought and the problems our industries have created in the environment?
These same dreamers of smaller government do not believe that we are part of global warming and that we are wasting time and money chasing windmills.
Again these people are just so wrong. We must start now with a complete, practical and hopefully economical plan to reduce our reliance on oil as a method of power and transport.
Then and not just second, we must address the social problems so prevalent in today's society. First and foremost is a broken and unrepairable health care system. As long as we inset insurance companies into the solution, nothing will be solved correctly.
We must have a "National Health Care System" governed by a single entity to see that all 250 million or so people receive (in a timely manner) treatment for their health problems.
Get the "Graveyard Bookies" out of this business completely.
Then we have education problems of almost unimaginable depth. From being the leader in the whole world, we have fallen to between 15th and 20th and now most college graduates owe huge dollar amounts on loans they had to take out just to get there. Unacceptable!
Inflation-- raising costs in everything from groceries to utilities-- is killing the middle class.
Employment-- all big corporations are trying to cut back and reduce wages paid to their employees so they can pay dividends to the stock holders. Just one question: if we employees decent wages for their work, who in the hell will be able to buy a home, a car, a new TV and take nice vacations, among other things? We won't need Wal-Mart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot or any of the many other large retailers if the workin man doesn't have the dollars to spend there!
So, conservatives, be very careful of what you wish for, because it may be the worst thing that could happen to you.
Don't worry about the size of government. Worry about the integrity and honesty and ethics of government.
Then, and only then will we be able to say with confidence, "This nation created by war as a means for all citizens to have an opportunity for life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness, can survive and flourish for the next 300 or so years."
